Lindy Hop was born from the fusion of African rhythms and movements with European dance and is a social dance that emerged in the African-American communities of Harlem, New York City, in the 1920s. Very popular during the era of swing music in the late 1930s, early 1940s, it is an energetic dance with a mixture of improvisation and playfulness.
A fusion of many dances that preceded or were popular during its development, based primarily on Jazz, Tap, Breakaway and Charleston. Having declined in popularity after World War II when the big ballrooms and big bands began to disappear, it continued to be danced mostly in Harlem. It resurfaced in the 1980s having spread around the world.
